Γιάννης Πελεκάνος

Πηγή έμπνευσης του ο πλούσιος χώρος της Κυπριακής παράδοσης και λαογραφίας. Στηρίζεται συχνά στις προσωπικές του εμπειρίες και στη δική του μνήμη την οποία ζωντανεύει διαβάζοντας βιβλία λαογραφίας και ιστορίας. Ο ίδιος αναφέρει για τη δουλειά του:

«Άλλοι γράφουν με λέξεις και κάνουν λογοτεχνία, άλλοι γράφουν στίχους και κάνουν ποίηση, άλλοι με νότες και κάνουν μουσική, εγώ ζωγραφίζω και γράφω με τη ζωγραφική μου την ιστορία του τόπου μου, τις παραδόσεις, τις συνήθειες και τις ομορφιές του. Τις ασχολίες των γυναικών στο σπίτι όπως το ζύμωμα, το φούρνισμα, το κόψιμο του φιδέ. Τις ασχολίες των χωρικών στα χωράφια όπως το αλώνισμα, το θέρισμα, το φύτεμα του βαμβακιού. Σκηνές από τη κυπριακή θρησκευτική παράδοση όπως τες σούσες της Λαμπρής, τα κάλαντα, την επιστροφή από τον Καλό Λόγο. Τη δημιουργία της οικογένειας όπως το προξενιό, το χάρτωμα, το γάμο και τες γιορτές του».

Με το έργο του ο Γιάννης Πελεκάνος προσπαθεί να μας μεταφέρει στο παρελθόν. Στόχος του πάντοτε ν’ αποθανατίσει αυτό που σιγά-σιγά χάνεται και σβήνει για πάντα. Η τέχνη του χαρακτηρίζεται από γνήσιους χρωματικούς τόνους και από το ένστικτο και την αίσθηση της κίνησης. Είναι αυθόρμητη και ειλικρινής όπως κάθε «ναΐφ».

Ο Γιάννης Πελεκάνος έχει στο ενεργητικό του 31 ατομικές εκθέσεις και πήρε μέρος σε πολλές ομαδικές. Έργα του ευρίσκονται στη Προεδρική συλλογή, στο Δημαρχείο Λάρνακας και σε πολλές ιδιωτικές συλλογές στη Κύπρο, Μεγ. Βρετανία, Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες και Βουλγαρία.

* Τον λαϊκό ζωγράφο Γιάννη Πελεκάνο παρουσίασε η Γκαλερύ Κυπριακή Γωνιά στη Λάρνακα από 17 Ιανουαρίου μέχρι 29 Ιανουαρίου 2005. Εγκαίνια από τον Κον. Μηλτιάδη Ερωτοκρίτου, Διευθυντή Δημοτικής Εκπαίδευσης.

Τα θέματα του ήταν παρμένα από τα ήθη, τα έθιμα, τις παραδόσεις, τις ασχολίες των κατοίκων της υπαίθρου. Πηγή έμπνευσης του ο πλούσιος χώρος της Κυπριακής παράδοσης και λαογραφίας. Στηρίζεται συχνά στις προσωπικές του εμπειρίες και στη δική του μνήμη την οποία ζωντανεύει διαβάζοντας βιβλία λαογραφίας και ιστορίας. Ο ίδιος αναφέρει για τη δουλειά του:

He exhibits his work, which was painted in small and big surfaces. His topics are inspired from the tradition, the customs, the culture and the occupations of the farmers. 

His source of inspiration is the rich palette of the Cypriot tradition and folklore. It is often supported by his personal experiences and his memory revived by reading books about folklore and history. He comments about his work: 

"Some use words to create literature, some others write verses and create poetry, or notes and create music, I paint and write with this instrument the history of my place, the traditions, the customs and its beauties. The pursuits of women at home, like kneading, baking and making pasta.  The occupations of the villagers in the fields like, threshing, harvesting and cotton planting. Scenes from the Cypriot traditions about religion like the swings in Easter, Epiphany Carols, returning home after the Resurrection Service. The creation of a family, like the matchmaking, the marriage and its feasts ". 

Yannis Pelekanos tries to transfer us to the past. His goal is to make live forever what is gradually vanishing. His art is characterized by genuine chromatic colors, his instincts and the sense of movement. He is spontaneous and sincere like every "naive".

 Yannis Pelekanos has exhibited individually twenty four times and participated in many group exhibitions. Some of his works are found in the Presidential collection, in Larnaka Town hall and in a lot of private collections in Cyprus, Great Britain the United States and Bulgaria.
