«Από την πρώτη στιγμή
καταλαβαίνει κάποιος που βλέπει τη ζωγραφική του Βαρνάβα το
ταλέντο και τον εσωτερικό πλούτο του. Μια ζωγραφική γεμάτη χρώμα
και απλότητα, χωρίς επιδεικτικότητα και αυτοπροβολή. Ακούγεται
σαν αυτονόητο και είναι ίσως στο βάθος, αλλά σήμερα που ο
καλλιτέχνης κατακλύζεται από την πληροφορία, την ποικιλία των
εικόνων από παντού, την πληθωρική εικόνα της πραγματικότητας
όπως προβάλλεται από τα ΜΜΕ δεν είναι αυτονόητο ότι κάποιος
σκύβει στα λιτά μέσα της ζωγραφικής για να εκφράσει σύνθετα
θέματα.
Μια ζωγραφική που συνδέεται με ένα παράξενο τρόπο με τον Ματίς,
τον Χόκνευ, με τον Γκίκα, με τη παιδική ζωγραφική. Αλογόκριτη
ζωγραφική και ως εκ τούτου τολμηρή. Ένα άλλο χαρακτηριστικό των
εικόνων που εναποθέτει στην επιφάνεια ο Βαρνάβας είναι η
χρωματική κλίμακα που μοιάζει να μην υπακούει σε δεδομένες
συνταγές. Μερικές φορές συνταιριάζει τα αταίριαστα με τη
εσωτερική αναγκαιότητα των χρωμάτων και όχι με την αισθητική
τους. Δεν επιδιώκει την αρμονία και την ισορροπία τους και
ακριβώς έτσι απλώνεται και η σύνθεση στην επιφάνεια. Στον πίνακα
π.χ. με το δέντρο και την φωλιά, ένα κομμάτι ουρανού έχει μπει
μέσα στο δέντρο σαν όνειρο αλλά με την υλική μορφή του χωρίς
ρομαντισμό κι αυτό προδίδει στη σύνθεση μια αλήθεια που κάνει το
έργο τόσο ελκυστικό. Στον ποδηλάτη-ταχυδρόμο ενώ κρατάει την
χειρονομία των επιστολών που πετάγονται στον αέρα, δεν
παρασύρεται προς τον σουρεαλισμό της εικόνας ενώ αντίθετα αφήνει
τις επιστολές να είναι γαντζωμένες στην σύνθεση, σαν να ήταν
πάντα εκεί.
Η
ζωγραφική του Βαρνάβα είναι μια τρανή απόδειξη ότι ποτέ δεν
πεθαίνει η καλή ζωγραφική με όποιον τρόπο κι αν γίνεται. Δεν
έχει απολύτως καμία σημασία το μέσον όταν είσαι αληθινός στην
τέχνη γιατί μόνον έτσι το μέσον σε υπακούει, διαφορετικά γίνεσαι
θύμα του».

was born in Kythrea, Cyprus. He studied at the Thesaloniki School of Fine Arts, Greece. He
has participated in
many group exhibitions.

“Varnava’s talent and
inner wealth is almost immediately understood when someone first
sees his painting. It is a kind of painting full of colour and
simplicity, free off ostentation and self projection. It sounds
self evident, and perhaps it is somewhere deep inside, but
nowadays when the artist is swamped with information, with a
variety of images found everywhere, with the excessive image of
reality as it is shown through the media, it is not self evident
that one uses the austere means of painting to express complex
issues.
A kind of painting
when is connected in a strange way with Matisse, Hockney, Geak
and with children’s painting; uncensored painting and thus bold.
Another characteristic of the images that Varnavas puts on the
surface is the chromatic scale which seems to defy the
mainstream applications. He sometimes matches dissimilar aspects
with the inner necessity of colours and not their aesthetics. He
does not aim at their harmony or their balance and this is
exactly how the composition spreads on the surface. For
instance, in his painting representing the tree and the nest, a
piece of the sky has penetrated the tree as in a dream but with
its materialistic form. Without romanticism and this is what
gives the composition a truth which makes the work of art so
attractive. In his painting showing the postman riding the
bicycle although the postman keeps the gesture of his hand –
which has just thrown the letters in the air – he is not carried
away towards the surrealism of the image, on the contrary, he
lets the letters hang in the composition as if they had always
been there.
Varnava’s painting proves greatly that good
painting never dies no matter how it is conducted. The medium
has absolutely no significance when you are real in art because
only this way can the medium obey the artist otherwise the
artist becomes a victim of the medium”. |
